Currency
A money column that shows the record's currency symbol and keeps an exchange rate and a base currency value.
What it is
A Currency column holds a monetary amount between -922,337,203,685,477 and 922,337,203,685,477. The form shows the amount with the symbol of the currency chosen on the record. Behind it sit a Currency lookup and a read-only Exchange Rate. The value converted to the organisation's base currency is stored in a matching column with the _Base suffix, calculated as the amount divided by the exchange rate.
When to use it
Use it for any amount of money, even in a single-currency organisation, because reports and the base value depend on it. For quantities that are not money, use Whole number, decimal and float.
Licensing and configuration
No extra licence. Add the column in the table designer and choose the precision: Pricing Decimal Precision, Currency Precision, or a fixed number from 0 to 4. Adding the first currency column also adds the Currency lookup and Exchange Rate. Admins manage currencies and exchange rates in the Power Platform admin center under the environment's legacy settings, Business Management, Currencies.
Pitfalls
- All currency columns on a record share one currency.
- The base column and the exchange rate are read-only, even if you add them to the form.
- The base currency is set up with the environment. Changing it afterwards is an admin task with exchange rate data to import.
- Put the Currency lookup on the form, or users cannot choose a currency.
Try it in the demo
- Open the first accelerator and find the Price field in the Numbers section.
- Note the currency symbol next to the amount.
- Change the Currency lookup on the General tab to another currency and watch the symbol change.
