What it is

The rich text editor is a control for a Multiple lines of text column. A toolbar above the text lets you set font and size, apply bold, italic and underline, change text and background colour, make bulleted and numbered lists, add links and insert tables. You can also paste formatted text from a browser or Word. The value is stored as HTML.

When to use it

Use it for descriptions, instructions and knowledge text that people read as a document. For short notes without formatting, the plain Multiple lines of text is lighter and easier to search and report on.

Licensing and configuration

No extra licence. Add the rich text editor control to a Multiple lines of text column on the form, in the form designer. The modern editor is based on CKEditor and is the current version. The classic editor was deprecated in April 2025. In the toolbar, Personalization Settings sets your default font and size.

Pitfalls

  • The editor strips scripts and unsupported tags and attributes, so pasted content can change.
  • Customisations made for the classic editor may have to be recreated in the modern one.
  • Images uploaded through the default configuration are not available offline.
  • The column stores HTML, so exports, reports and flows see markup rather than plain text.

Try it in the demo

  1. Open the first accelerator and find the Rich text editor section.
  2. Make some text bold, add a bulleted list and insert a link.
  3. Insert a table.
  4. Save the record. The editor loads on demand, so the first click may take a moment.
