Related dataModel-driven app

Related menu

A menu next to the form tabs that opens the related rows of each relationship as a temporary tab.

What it is

On a main form, the Related dropdown sits after the tabs. It lists the tables that have a relationship to the current one, for example Help requests or Accounts. Choosing an entry opens the associated view of those rows in a temporary tab, filtered to the record you are on.

The tab has the view's command bar. For a many-to-many relationship it offers Add existing.

When to use it

Use it to reach every row related to a record without putting a Subgrid on the form for each relationship. It is also the place to see all rows when a subgrid only shows the first page.

If people look at the same related list all day, put it on the form as a subgrid. The menu needs an extra click and is easy to miss.

Licensing and configuration

No extra licence. The menu is generated from the table's relationships and the main form. In the form designer you control which tabs and subgrids the form has. The tables listed also depend on what is in the app and on the user's privileges. The associated view of each relationship is defined on the related table. There is no designer setting for each menu entry.

Pitfalls

  • Entries depend on the app. If a related table is not in the app, it does not show up, which looks like a missing relationship.
  • The associated view decides which columns people see. A bare view makes the temporary tab look unfinished.
  • Activities and notes are not listed here. They live in the Timeline.
  • The tab is temporary: it disappears when you leave the record.

  2. Choose Accounts. The related accounts open in a temporary tab.
  3. Select Add existing and pick an account.
  4. Choose another entry from the menu.
