Subgrid
A list of related rows on a form, with its own command bar for New, Add existing, Delete, Refresh and paging.
What it is
A subgrid shows rows from another table on the form, usually the children of the record you are on. It has its own command bar. For a 1:N relationship you see New, Delete and Refresh. For a many-to-many relationship you see Add existing and Remove. A link opens the full list as an associated view, and paging appears when there are more rows than fit.
Double-click or select a row to open it. New opens a quick create form with the parent already filled in.
When to use it
Use it for a short list of related rows people need while working on the main record, such as help requests on an accelerator.
For long lists, open the associated view from the Related menu. If rows read better as small cards, use a Card form. For activities and notes, the Timeline fits better.
Licensing and configuration
No extra licence. In the form designer, add a Subgrid component, keep Show related records on to list only related rows, then choose the table and the default view. You can set the number of rows per page (Maximum number of rows) and let users change views. The editable grid control can replace the read-only list.
Pitfalls
- A subgrid shows what its view returns. Columns missing from the view will not appear, so edit the view.
- Using many subgrids on one form slows loading. Move some to separate tabs.
- Deleting from a subgrid deletes the row itself. Only for N:N does Remove just end the link.
- The command bar of a subgrid is not customised in the same way as the form's command bar.
Try it in the demo
- Open the first accelerator and scroll to the Help requests subgrid.
- Select New and create a help request in the side panel.
- Select a row, use Delete and confirm.
- Use See associated records to open the full list.
