Command bar
The row of buttons above a grid or form with the actions for that page, such as New, Delete and Refresh, with extras under the ellipsis.
What it is
The command bar sits under the app header and shows the actions for the current page. On a grid it offers New, Delete, Refresh and similar buttons that act on the selected rows. On a form it shows Save, Deactivate, Assign, Share and more. When the window is narrow, buttons that don't fit move into the ... overflow menu.
When to use it
Put an action on the command bar when it applies to the whole page or to the selected rows and a user would expect it next to Save or New. Use it for a process step, a flow trigger or a Word template. A field-level action belongs in the form itself, and an action only one person needs is usually better as a personal view or a saved filter.
Licensing and configuration
No extra licence for the standard commands. You edit commands in the command designer: in the app designer, select ... next to a table page, then Edit command bar, and pick the location (main grid, main form, subgrid and so on). The first time, you choose JavaScript only or Power Fx; choosing Power Fx also lets you use JavaScript. Modern commands are scoped to the app you edit them in.
Pitfalls
- Classic ribbon customisations can't be edited in the command designer until they are migrated to the modern framework.
- A command that calls several JavaScript libraries or functions isn't supported; use one library and one function per command.
- The command designer doesn't cover the global app header.
- Visibility rules decide when a button shows, so "my button vanished" usually means the rule failed, not that the button is gone.
Try it in the demo
- Select a few rows in the grid and watch the buttons change.
- Narrow the window and open the ... menu.
- Select Flow, Word Templates or Run Report: the demo shows a "not available in this demo" message.
