Quick view form

Read-only details of a related record, shown on the form you are working in and driven by a lookup column.

What it is

A quick view form shows details of a related record on the form you have open, without leaving it. It hangs on a lookup column: pick a category and its code, parent category, lead and description appear in a section below the lookup. The data is read-only. If the quick view form includes the primary column, that value links to the related record.

When to use it

Use it when people need a few reference facts from the parent record while they work on the child, such as the phone number of a primary contact on an account. If they need many related rows, use a Subgrid. If the name alone is enough, the Lookup on its own does the job.

Licensing and configuration

No extra licence. First create a quick view form on the related table (Forms, then New form, then Quick view form). Then open the main form in the form designer, select + Component, choose Quick view, pick the lookup column and select the quick view form. In the app designer, use Manage forms to make sure the quick view form is included in the app.

Pitfalls

  • The related table needs a quick view form before you can add the component.
  • When the lookup is empty, the quick view component is hidden. Do not rely on it to hold space in the layout.
  • Users cannot edit data through it, so do not use it as a shortcut for editing the parent.
  • A quick view form that is not selected under Manage forms will not show up in the app.

Try it in the demo

  1. Open the Category info tab of the first accelerator.
  2. Read the category details under the Category lookup.
  3. Change the Category to another record and watch the details change.
  4. Clear the lookup and note that the details disappear.
