Save status
The Saved or Unsaved indicator on a form, with Ctrl+S, the leave-without-saving prompt and autosave.
What it is
The save status sits after the record name and reads Saved or Unsaved. It changes as soon as you edit a column. Press Ctrl+S or select Save to store the record. If you try to leave a form with unsaved changes, the app asks whether to save and continue or discard the changes.
When to use it
It is always on, so the question is how saving behaves. Autosave suits most processes. Switch it off when plug-ins, flows or scripts were built to expect one deliberate save. Where users must approve every change, add a clear Form notification or a business process step rather than relying on the indicator.
Licensing and configuration
No extra licence. Autosave is on by default for main forms. A change is saved 30 seconds after you make it, and after the first save the Save button on the command bar is no longer shown. Admins turn it off per environment in the Power Platform admin center: Manage, Environments, Settings, Product, Behavior, then Auto save. There is no setting for a single table or form.
Pitfalls
- With autosave, every save runs plug-ins, flows and form scripts. Build them to react to specific changes.
- Auditing records each autosave as a separate update.
- An unexpected Unsaved status after opening a record often comes from an OnLoad script, a plug-in or a business rule that changed a column. Monitor shows the cause.
- A script on the OnSave event can cancel the save, and then the record appears not to save.
Try it in the demo
- Change the name of the first accelerator and see Saved turn into Unsaved.
- Press Ctrl+S and see it return to Saved.
- Edit again and open another record. Choose Save and continue or Discard changes.
Autosave is off in the demo.
