Chart pane

A chart shown beside a view with Show Chart, built on the same rows as the grid, where selecting a part filters the list.

What it is

On a list page, the Show Chart command opens a pane with a chart next to the grid. The chart counts or sums the rows of the current view, so a filter you apply to the grid also changes the chart. You pick a different chart from the chart list, and system charts and your own charts (My Charts) are listed separately. Selecting a part of the chart drills down and filters the grid.

When to use it

Use it for a quick look at the shape of one list, such as help requests by priority, while you work in that list. Use a Classic dashboard to show charts from several tables together, and an Interactive dashboard for queue work with page-wide filters.

Licensing and configuration

No extra licence. A maker creates a system chart for a table in the solution: Tables, the table, Charts under Data experiences, New chart. You choose the chart type (Column, Bar, Pie and others), the column, the aggregate and the category, then Save and Publish. If the app does not show all charts for the table, you also select the new chart in the app designer. Microsoft documents a limit of 50,000 rows for a chart.

Pitfalls

  • A new chart does not show up in the pane until it is published and the app includes it.
  • A chart stops working on a view with more than 50,000 rows and shows a message instead.
  • Only the rows of the selected view count. A narrow view makes a chart that looks empty.
  • The pane takes screen width from the grid, which hurts on small screens.

Try it in the demo

  1. Open Help requests at the deep link. The chart pane is already open.
  2. Select a bar. The grid filters to that group.
  3. Select Clear chart filter, or choose another chart from the list.
  4. Use the table toggle on the chart to see its data as a table.
