Editable grid
A grid where you click a cell to edit it in place, with changed cells marked and Save and Discard buttons at the bottom of the grid.
What it is
In an editable grid you change values directly in the rows without opening each form. Click a cell and it becomes an input suited to its type: a text box, a date picker, a drop-down or a toggle. Changed cells are marked. A footer with Save and Discard appears while there are changes. Rows are validated as they save.
When to use it
Use it for tables where people maintain many short rows, such as categories, price lists or lookup tables, or on a subgrid for quick entry. Don't use it for rows with long forms, rich text or complex business rules, where a Main form is a better fit.
Licensing and configuration
No extra licence. In the Power Apps grid control, set Enable editing to Yes (the default is No) on the grid, in the form designer for a subgrid or the control settings for a main grid. Microsoft deprecated the older Editable Grid control in March 2026 and recommends the Power Apps grid control for both read-only and editable grids. The grid still honours business rules, field-level security and client-side events such as OnChange, OnRecordSelect and OnSave.
Pitfalls
- Whole-grid editing fails if the grid is set to read-only, or if the parent form is read-only (for example, an inactive record).
- Individual cells stay read-only for calculated columns, columns the user can't edit, or columns a script locked.
- Pending changes are saved when the selection changes, when you sort, filter, group or page, or when you press the save button. Don't assume you can sort first and save later.
Try it in the demo
- Open the Categories grid and click a cell to edit it.
- Clear a required value and see the validation on the row.
- Select Save or Discard in the footer.
