Record set navigation
Up and down arrows and an n of N counter on a form opened from a list, to move between rows without going back.
What it is
When you open a row from a list, the form header shows arrows and a counter such as 2 of 14. The arrows move to the previous or next row of that list. The counter opens the row set: a list of the rows from the grid, in the same order, so you can pick one. In Microsoft's apps the command is called Open Row Set (older articles say Open Record Set).
When to use it
It helps with review work: going through a batch of accelerators, cases or leads one after the other. If people always work from a Kanban view or a dashboard, they still have the list one click away. It needs no choice from a maker, because it is on when a form is opened from a view.
Licensing and configuration
No extra licence. It is part of the Unified Interface form and needs no setup. Microsoft notes that the number of rows in the row set pane is based on the number that your administrator defined for the subgrid. The Page Navigation form property controls whether the navigation items on the form show.
Pitfalls
- The row set exists only when you open the form from a list. If you open a row from a link or from a search result, there is none.
- Moving to another row with unsaved changes triggers the unsaved-changes prompt. See Save status.
- The set reflects the list when you opened it. New rows added later do not appear.
- Large lists show only the rows loaded in the first page.
Try it in the demo
- Open the Accelerators list, then open a row. The form carries the n of N counter.
- Select the down arrow to go to the next accelerator.
- Select the counter to see the whole list and pick a row.
