Jump bar
A row of letters A to Z under a grid that filters the rows to names starting with the letter you select.
What it is
The jump bar is a strip of letters, with an "all" option, that appears beneath the grid on some tables. Select a letter and the grid shows only the rows whose name starts with that letter. Select the "all" option to clear it. It is a quick way to move around a long alphabetical list, such as contacts or accounts.
When to use it
Use it when people browse by name and the list is sorted by the name column. It is faster than typing in the search box when you only know the first letter. For finding by any word in a row, use Quick find or Dataverse search instead.
Licensing and configuration
No extra licence. The jump bar is part of the grid, and there is nothing to add in the designers. If you swap the grid control for a table, check that the bar is still there.
Pitfalls
- It filters on the first letter of the name, not on whichever column you happen to have sorted.
- Names that don't start with a Latin letter are easy to miss, so keep the all option in mind.
- The jump bar combines with the view's filter and quick find, so a letter can return no rows when another filter is active.
Try it in the demo
- Open the Contacts grid.
- Select the letter B under the grid and note that only names starting with B stay.
- Select the all option to reset the list.
