Column header menu
The menu on each column header of a grid: sort A to Z or Z to A, filter by, group by, change the column width and move the column.
What it is
Select the arrow on a column header in a grid and a menu opens. It offers A to Z and Z to A sorting, Filter by for a quick condition on that column, Group by, a column width option, and Move left and Move right. The options you see depend on the column type: a choice column offers its values, a date column offers date operators.
When to use it
Use it for quick, temporary shaping of what you see: sort by a date, filter one column, group to count. The changes apply to your current session and are not saved to the view. For multi-column conditions and related tables, use Edit filters. To keep a layout, save it as a personal view with the View selector.
Licensing and configuration
No extra licence. The menu is part of the Power Apps grid control. Makers switch parts on or off in the control properties: Enable filtering and Enable sorting are on by default, while Enable grouping, Enable aggregation and Allow column reordering are off by default. Moving columns also needs reordering enabled.
Pitfalls
- If Group by is missing, the maker left Enable grouping at its default (No).
- Column filters combine with the view's own filter and quick find text. People forget that a header filter is still active and think rows are missing.
- Filters from the header don't change the view definition, so they are gone after you switch views.
Try it in the demo
- Open the menu on a text column and choose Z to A.
- Use Filter by on a choice column to pick one value.
- Use Move left on another column. The demo leaves out Group by.
